The hotel

Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa is a family-friendly beach resort on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, near Land's End, owned by the local Solmar Hotels & Resorts group. It is steps from the Cabo San Lucas Marina, around 2 minutes by car without traffic and a bit longer at rush hour. The resort opened in 1998 and has 261 rooms and suites.

The resort has a private beach on the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, near Land's End. The open Pacific here is rough: Los Cabos Magazine warns that neighboring Playa Solmar has rogue waves, a steep drop-off and undertow. Swim in the resort's infinity pools, or head to Playa El Médano on the bay side.1

History and curious facts

The story of Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa

Playa Grande belongs to the only hotel chain born at Land's End. Its founder, Luis Bulnes Molleda, came to Cabo San Lucas from Ribadesella, Spain, in 1954 to manage the tuna cannery, when the town had about 400 people and no hotels. He opened Hotel Solmar in 1974 with 20 rooms and two suites, and the family business grew from there. Playa Grande opened next door in 1998, and The Ridge at Playa Grande followed in 2005. The resort's architecture takes its cue from Mexican haciendas.

Bulnes died in 2011. His son Francisco "Paco" Bulnes led the next decade of growth, and since 2021 the group has been run by his daughter, Rosario "Charo" Bulnes. Solmar celebrated 50 years in 2024 and today counts six properties in Los Cabos, Playa Grande among them.

  3. The Ridge at Playa Grande, a luxury section next to the original resort, opened in 2005, seven years after Playa Grande itself.3
  4. Besides its pools, the resort has a saltwater jacuzzi with ocean views and a mini-golf course.2

Your yacht day

A day on a yacht from Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spa

From Playa Grande the trip to the boat is short: our driver picks you up at the lobby and you are at the Marina in about 2 minutes without traffic. Each yacht boards at its own dock in the marina, so the driver drops you close to yours. Playa Grande is Solmar's family resort, so a family charter or a snorkel day works well: you cruise past the Arch and Land's End and stop in calm water to swim. From December to April you can book a whale-watching outing, and couples staying here often pick a sunset sail. The driver brings you back to the resort when you land.
