What's there

Sand, rock and a calm bay.

Swimming and snorkeling

Swim and snorkel on the Sea of Cortez side only, where the water is calmer 1.

Walk over to the Pacific

A short walk across the sand takes you to Divorce Beach on the open Pacific, to look, not to swim 2.

The Sand Falls below

The largest of the underwater Sand Falls is the one closest to this beach 3.

The Arch next door

The Arch stands just east of the beach, so you can see it from the sand.

The story

A 1959 storm and a river of sand.

In 1959 a storm stripped about 30 inches (76 cm) of sand from Playa del Amor. Diving off the beach, Conrad Limbaugh saw sand pouring over rocks at about 110 ft (34 m) deep, like an underwater waterfall 3.

Those Sand Falls, which run for about 800 m (half a mile) toward Pelican Rock 3, are why the area was first protected in 1973 4.

Before it was Lover's Beach, locals called it Playa de Doña Chepa 1. Where the romantic name came from is not documented; the stories you will hear on the boat come from tour companies.
