Divorce Beach (Playa del Divorcio) is the Pacific side of Lover's Beach, at Land's End, about 1 mile (1.7 km) from Marina Cabo San Lucas. You cannot swim there. Big surf, a strong undertow and a steep drop-off make it one of the most dangerous stretches of water in Cabo, and the best way to see it is from a boat.
It is worth seeing. The swell rolls in straight off the open ocean and breaks on the sand, a short walk from the calm water on the other side.
Where is Divorce Beach?
Land's End is the rocky point at the very tip of the Baja peninsula, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. Near the end of it, a strip of sand crosses a narrow neck of the rock. The end facing the bay is Lover's Beach. The end facing the Pacific is Divorce Beach.
So "Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach" is really one beach with two very different shorelines. You can walk from one to the other across the sand in a couple of minutes.
The Arch is a little farther out, about 1.2 miles from the marina, and the sea lion colony sits on the rocks next to it. All of it is inside a federal protected area that covers Land's End.

Why is it called Divorce Beach?
Because of the beach behind it. The calm bay side is Playa del Amor, Lover's Beach, so the wild Pacific side of the same sand got the opposite name: Playa del Divorcio. It is a local joke built on what the water does on each side.
There is also a legend told around Cabo about a couple whose romance began on one side and ended in tragedy on the other. It makes a good story on the boat. The simpler explanation, the contrast between the two shorelines, is the one you'll usually hear.
Can you swim at Divorce Beach?
No, regardless of how the water looks that morning.
Here is what makes it dangerous:
- It faces the open Pacific, with nothing to break the swell before it reaches the sand.
- The shore break is heavy. Waves dump hard right at the waterline.
- The bottom drops off steeply a short way out, so you can lose your footing fast.
- Rip currents pull water back out to sea along the beach.
People have drowned at Divorce Beach over the years, and rogue waves have caught people who were only standing on the wet sand. In July 2026, authorities placed a black flag at Divorce Beach. In the Los Cabos beach flag system, black means the beach is closed to swimming. A red flag means high hazard, and you should stay out.
Even when no flag is flying, treat the water as closed. There are no lifeguards on either side of the beach.
Divorce Beach vs Lover's Beach at a glance
| Divorce Beach | Lover's Beach | |
|---|---|---|
| Faces | Open Pacific | Sea of Cortez (the bay) |
| Surf | Big, heavy shore break | Usually calm |
| Swimming | No | Yes, with care |
| Lifeguards | None | None |

Can you walk on Divorce Beach?
Yes, if you stay well back from the water. Most people get there by landing on Lover's Beach, either from a water taxi or by swimming in from a private yacht, and then walking across the sand to the Pacific side.
There is also a rock scramble onto Divorce Beach from Playa Solmar, on the Pacific side of town, at low tide. It runs right along the surf line and the rocks are loose. We tell guests to skip it.
If you do walk over:
- Stay on the dry sand. The wet sand is where the waves reach.
- Never turn your back on the water for a photo.
- Keep kids by the hand.
- Wear water shoes or sandals with a strap, because the sand gets hot by midday.
The best way to see Divorce Beach: from the boat
From the water you get the angle you can't get on the sand. The captain holds the boat off the beach on the Pacific side, outside the break, and you see the whole thing at once: the surf, the strip of sand, and the calm bay through the gap in the rocks behind it.
Two of our standard routes pass Divorce Beach:
| Route | Length | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| 2 h Arch & Land's End | 4.7 mi round trip | Pelican Rock, sea lions, the Arch, Lover's and Divorce Beach, Médano Beach |
| 2 h Pacific sunset | 12 mi round trip | The Arch, sea lions, Divorce Beach, then toward Cabo Falso lighthouse |
The Pacific side is where the sun goes down. On the sunset cruise, the boat heads around Land's End and faces the sun as it drops toward Cabo Falso, passing Divorce Beach on the way out.

What else is on the Pacific side?
Divorce Beach is the first stretch of Pacific coast you meet as you round Land's End, and there is more to see beyond it.
Right next to the Arch, California sea lions haul out on the rocks of the sea lion colony. Captains slow down and idle nearby so you can watch them without disturbing them, and both the Land's End route and the sunset route pass them.
Farther up the Pacific coast, 3.6 miles (5.7 km) from the marina, is Cabo Falso, the westernmost point of the cape. Its old lighthouse, built in 1905, sits above the dunes. The sunset route heads that way, so after Divorce Beach the boat runs along a long line of granite cliffs and sand with nothing between you and the open ocean.
That stretch is also where you notice the difference between the two seas. On the bay side the boat glides. On the Pacific side you feel the swell under the hull.
Is Divorce Beach ever calm enough to swim?
Some mornings the Pacific looks flat from a distance. It still isn't a swimming beach. The drop-off is steep a few steps from shore, the shore break comes in sets, and a quiet stretch can end with a much bigger wave. Lifeguards don't work this beach, and help is a boat ride away.
If you want to get in the water at Land's End, walk 2 minutes across the sand to the bay side. If you want to snorkel, Pelican Rock is inside the bay, 0.8 miles from the marina, with calm, clear water.
What does a boat trip past Divorce Beach cost?
Any of our yachts can run these routes. Prices are per boat, not per person, with 16% IVA tax included. The customary 15% crew tip is not included.
| Yacht | Guests | 2 hours |
|---|---|---|
| Chaparral 28 | up to 10 | USD 519 / MXN 9,799 |
| Bayliner 30 | up to 6 | USD 549 / MXN 10,499 |
| Sea Ray 36 | up to 12 | USD 659 / MXN 12,599 |
| Sea Ray 40 | up to 12 | USD 879 / MXN 16,799 |
| Sea Ray 55 | up to 15 | USD 2,129 / MXN 40,399 (3 h) |
All of these board at Marina Cabo San Lucas, downtown. The Pacific side gets more swell than the bay, so if anyone in your group gets seasick, a bigger boat like the Sea Ray 40 or Sea Ray 55 usually rides it more smoothly than a small one.
When the harbor closes
Some days the Port Captain (Capitanía de Puerto, run by the Mexican Navy) closes the harbor. That happens only under a hurricane or storm threat or another extraordinary situation, and most closures fall between September and mid-October. If your date is closed, you choose a new date or get a full refund.
On the day, your captain decides how close to hold off Divorce Beach based on the swell that day.
Planning your trip to Land's End
If you want to swim, plan your stop on the bay side. Our Lover's Beach guide covers how to get there and what to bring, and which Cabo beaches are safe to swim lists the calm ones around town and along the corridor.
If you want the view, book 2 hours and ask for the Pacific side, or choose the sunset slot. Pick a yacht and a date in the planner. We reply within 2 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM Cabo time.

Questions people ask
Can you swim at Divorce Beach in Cabo?
No. Divorce Beach faces the open Pacific, with big surf, a strong undertow and a steep drop-off close to shore. People have drowned there, and in July 2026 authorities flew a black flag at the beach, which means the water is closed.
Why is it called Divorce Beach?
The name is a joke on its neighbor. Lover's Beach, on the calm bay side, is called Playa del Amor, so the rough Pacific side of the same strip of sand became Playa del Divorcio. A local legend about a doomed couple is also told, but the contrast in the water is the usual explanation.
Are Lover's Beach and Divorce Beach the same beach?
They share one strip of sand across a narrow neck of Land's End, about 1 mile (1.7 km) from Marina Cabo San Lucas. One end faces the Sea of Cortez (Lover's Beach) and the other faces the Pacific (Divorce Beach). You can walk from one to the other in a couple of minutes.
How do you see Divorce Beach?
From a boat. The 2-hour Arch & Land's End route and the 2-hour Pacific sunset route both pass it. If you land on Lover's Beach, you can also walk across the sand to look at it from the shore.
