If you're staying in the San José del Cabo hotel zone, a yacht day starts with a drive: our yachts board at Marina Cabo San Lucas, about 28 km away in a straight line and around 30 minutes by car without traffic. A sunset cruise fits that drive best. You leave the hotel mid-afternoon, sail for two hours past the Arch as the sun goes down, and are back in San José in time for dinner.
This guide covers the six hotel zone resorts on San José's beach, how far each is from the marina, what the transfer costs, and how to time the day. We're an independent booking agency, not affiliated with any of these hotels.
Which hotels are in the San José del Cabo hotel zone?
The hotel zone is the strip of resorts on San José's beach, a few minutes from the historic center. Our transportation table calls it Zone 1, together with the historic center. These are the six resorts with pages in our hotel guide:
| Hotel | To the marina, straight line | By car, no traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos | 27.6 km | 29 min |
| Viceroy Los Cabos | 28.1 km | 30 min |
| GR Solaris Lighthouse | 28.2 km | 30 min |
| Royal Solaris Los Cabos | 28.4 km | 30 min |
| Cabo Azul | 28.5 km | 32 min |
| The Grand Mayan | 28.7 km | 32 min |
Those driving times assume an empty highway. At rush hour the trip takes longer, so pad your schedule. GR Solaris Lighthouse even notes that it is closer to the airport (about 20 km) than to the Cabo San Lucas marina.
Can you swim in front of the San José hotels?
Ask before you go in. Royal Solaris says plainly that its beach is not swimmable because of strong currents, and it points guests to Playa Palmilla, Santa María or Médano Beach, about 15 minutes away. Its neighbor, GR Solaris Lighthouse, doesn't say. Neither do Viceroy, Hyatt Ziva, Cabo Azul or The Grand Mayan.
The surf on this stretch changes a lot. In April 2026, Zofemat raised red flags and banned swimming at San José beaches such as Costa Azul and Las Palmas. Check the flag at the lifeguard post every time.
That's one reason San José guests book a boat day. On the bay side of Cabo San Lucas the water is calmer, and a yacht anchors where you can swim off the stern.

How do you get from San José to the marina?
Yachts don't pick up at hotels, and none of ours leave from San José. Each yacht boards at its own dock in Marina Cabo San Lucas; your exact dock and a map link come on your boarding pass.
You can drive, take a taxi, or have us book a private driver for the round trip. The driver charges you directly, separate from the yacht: the cash price, or 5% more by card on the driver's terminal. Zone 1 prices:
| Vehicle | Guests | One way | Round trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| SUV | up to 4 | USD 75 cash · 79 card | USD 160 cash · 168 card |
| Van | 9 to 11 | USD 80 cash · 84 card | USD 160 cash · 168 card |
| Escalade | up to 6 | USD 95 cash · 100 card | USD 180 cash · 189 card |
| Sprinter | 19 to 20 | USD 100 cash · 105 card | USD 220 cash · 231 card |
The round trip costs about the same as two one-way rides. If you plan to stay in Cabo San Lucas for dinner, one way and a taxi back can work too. The transportation page has every zone.
When should you leave your hotel?
Work backward from your departure time. Count about 30 minutes of driving without traffic, add a buffer for rush hour, and plan to be at the dock a little early so you sail on time.
For a 10 AM snorkel departure, that means leaving the hotel around 9 AM. For a sunset cruise, it depends on the month, because the sun sets anywhere from about 5:35 PM in late November and early December to about 7:10 PM in early July. Boats usually leave about 90 minutes before sunset:
| Month | Sunset, approx. | Departure | Leave San José |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 5:55 PM | 4:30 PM | about 3:30 PM |
| March | 6:30 PM | 5:00 PM | about 4:00 PM |
| May | 6:55 PM | 5:25 PM | about 4:25 PM |
| July | 7:10 PM | 5:40 PM | about 4:40 PM |
| October | 5:55 PM | 4:25 PM | about 3:25 PM |
| December | 5:35 PM | 4:05 PM | about 3:05 PM |
The trip guide has sunset times for every month.
Which charter fits a San José hotel guest?
The drive is the same 30 minutes whether you sail for two hours or six. For a short stay, the 2-hour sunset cruise is the easiest choice: one afternoon, back for dinner, and you still see the Arch, the sea lions and Land's End in golden light. The route rounds Land's End to the Pacific side and faces the sun as it drops toward the Cabo Falso lighthouse.

If you're making the drive anyway and want the morning on the water, the 4-hour snorkel route is the other good option. Santa María is closed for snorkeling as of October 10, 2026, expected to reopen in November, so for now that route uses Pelican Rock by the Arch.
Some 2-hour prices, per boat, with the 16% tax included (the suggested 15% crew tip is not included):
| Yacht | Guests | 2 hours |
|---|---|---|
| Chaparral 28 | up to 10 | USD 519 (MXN 9,799) |
| Sea Ray 36 | up to 12 | USD 659 (MXN 12,599) |
| Sea Ray 40 | up to 12 | USD 879 (MXN 16,799) |
| Azimut 45 | up to 12 | USD 1,249 (MXN 23,799) |
Yachts sail until 8 PM, and those from the marina may stay anchored in the bay until 10 PM. A late anchor is nice, but remember the drive home.
Back in San José for dinner
A 2-hour sunset cruise ends around dark, and with the drive you're back in San José in the early evening. The historic center grew around the Misión de San José del Cabo Añuití, founded in 1730, and on Thursdays Plaza Mijares has a cultural market with local artisans. From November through June the galleries behind the church open late for the Thursday Art Walk, 5 to 9 PM. Our list of things to do in San José del Cabo has more for the evening.

The six resorts, briefly
Each hotel has its own page with history and details. A few facts that help you place them:
- Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos was announced in November 2013 as the first all-inclusive resort to carry the Hyatt name. Hurricane Odile damaged it in September 2014, and it reopened on September 15, 2015 with 591 suites.
- Viceroy Los Cabos opened in 2016 as Hotel Mar Adentro, designed by Miguel Ángel Aragonés, and reopened as Viceroy in May 2018. Its Nido restaurant sits in the middle of the reflecting pool.
- Royal Solaris Los Cabos opened in July 2001 as the chain's second hotel, after its towers in Cancún. Since 2024 the same chain also runs GR Solaris Lighthouse, the former Barceló Grand Faro, on the next lot.
- Cabo Azul opened in September 2007, has an open-air wedding chapel over the Sea of Cortez, and is now Cabo Azul, a Hilton Vacation Club.
- The Grand Mayan, a Vidanta resort, has its own nine-hole golf course and pools built in three tiers that end at the sand.
At the east end of the hotel zone is the Estero de San José del Cabo, a state reserve since 1994 and a Ramsar wetland since 2009, with 217 recorded species of waterbirds. It's worth a visit on the morning before or after your boat day.
Planning checklist for San José guests
- Pick the departure time first, then book the driver around it.
- Book the round-trip transfer with the yacht so we can match the pickup.
- Bring sunscreen, a light layer for the evening breeze, and your own towel unless you're on the Sea Ray 36, Sea Ray 40 or Azimut 45.
- If the group is bigger than 12, look at the Pontoon 38 (up to 18) and a Sprinter for the ride.
Choose a date and yacht in the planner, and ask for the transfer when you book. We reply within 2 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM Cabo time.
