How to propose on a private boat in Cabo San Lucas: the spot, the timing, the photographer and what it costs
Where to propose on the water in Cabo, when to leave for golden hour, which yacht to book, what our proposal setup includes and how to keep it secret.

In this guide
The best place for a Cabo boat proposal is the Arch at golden hour, on a private yacht where the only other people on board are your captain and the crew, plus a photographer if you add one. A 2-hour charter on the Bayliner 30, for up to 6 guests, costs USD 549 (MXN 10,499) per boat with 16% tax included. It boards at Dock 1-A (Zaidas), by Captain Tony's, in Marina Cabo San Lucas, and the Arch is 1.2 miles from the dock, so two hours covers the ride out, the question and the ride back with the town lights on.
Planning one means picking a spot on the water, timing the light, choosing a yacht for two people (or two plus family) and keeping the whole thing secret until the ring comes out. The couples experience page has more on private trips for two, and if you're still choosing between the water and the town, our Cabo proposal ideas list covers both.
Where on the water to propose in Cabo
Everything worth seeing at Land's End is within a few miles of Marina Cabo San Lucas. These are the spots captains pass on the standard routes, with the distance from the dock.
| Spot | From the marina | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| The Arch | 1.2 mi / 1.9 km | The classic Cabo photo |
| Off Lover's Beach | 1 mi / 1.7 km | Calm bay side, good for anchoring |
| Facing Divorce Beach | 1 mi / 1.7 km | Pacific surf behind you |
| Toward Cabo Falso lighthouse | 3.6 mi / 5.7 km | Sun sets over open ocean |
The Arch at golden hour
The Arch is a granite formation at the very tip of the Baja peninsula, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. Every route passes it because the best angle is from the water. In the late afternoon the low sun lights up the rock, and a photo of the two of you with the Arch behind is the shot most couples plan around.
The waters around the Arch are a protected area, and the CONANP conservation fee is included in the charter price. California sea lions haul out on the rocks right next to it, and captains slow down and idle near the sea lion colony, which gives you a pause in the trip without having to ask for one.
Anchored off Lover's Beach
Lover's Beach is a strip of sand on the calm bay side of Land's End, reached by boat. If you'd rather propose with the boat still and quiet, ask the captain to anchor off it. People swim on this side, so it's the calmer option if either of you gets nervous on a moving deck.
Right behind it, on the Pacific side, is Divorce Beach. Big surf and a strong undertow make it a place for photos from the boat and never for swimming, and the waves breaking on the sand look good behind you in a picture.

The Pacific side at sunset
The 2-hour Pacific sunset route goes around Land's End to face the sun as it drops toward Cabo Falso, the westernmost point of the cape, with its 1905 lighthouse above the dunes. It's about 12 miles round trip. If you want the sun to set over open water while you ask, take this route.

When to propose: timing the light
Sunset in Cabo San Lucas comes earliest in late November and December and latest in early July. Cabo is on Mountain Standard Time all year and does not change for daylight saving, so look up your exact date in the trip guide before you set the departure.
On a 2-hour charter, leave about 90 minutes before sunset. That covers the trip out past the sea lions, time at the Arch in the warm light, and the sunset itself on the water. Departures run until 7 PM, and yachts sail until 8 PM.
After the yes, you don't have to rush back. Yachts that leave from the marina may stay anchored in the bay until 10 PM, so you can add time to call family, open a bottle and watch the lights come on in town.
For couples, the months we recommend are January, February, March, June, November and December. Whales start arriving in November and stay through April, though a sighting isn't guaranteed.
If your date falls between September and mid-October, that's when most harbor closures happen. The Port Captain closes the harbor only under a hurricane or storm threat. If it closes, you get a new date or a full refund, but a proposal is harder to move than a sunset cruise, so plan a backup day.

Which yacht to book for a proposal
For just the two of you, a smaller yacht keeps it intimate and the price low. If family or friends are coming along to celebrate after the yes, size up.
| Yacht | Max guests | 2 hours | 3 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaparral 28 | 10 | USD 519 / MXN 9,799 | USD 709 / MXN 13,599 |
| Bayliner 30 | 6 | USD 549 / MXN 10,499 | USD 799 / MXN 15,199 |
| Sea Ray 40 | 12 | USD 879 / MXN 16,799 | USD 1,199 / MXN 22,799 |
| Azimut 70 | 12 | 3-hour minimum | USD 4,199 / MXN 79,799 |
| McKinna 70 | 12 | 3-hour minimum | USD 4,499 / MXN 85,499 |
Prices are per boat with 16% tax included. The customary 15% crew tip is not included.
The Bayliner 30 is a 30-foot cabin cruiser for up to 6, with a professional captain, a cooler with ice, bottled water and sodas, and snorkel gear. The cabin is useful on a proposal: you can hide flowers, a bottle or a friend with a camera there until the moment. Our best yacht for 2 in Cabo guide compares the Bayliner 30 with the other small boats.
The Sea Ray 40 is a flybridge yacht for up to 12. From the upper deck the photographer can shoot straight down onto the bow, and there's room for both families.
The two 70-footers are the splurge. The Azimut 70 includes a menu on board and complimentary beer and cocktails served by its crew of three, with two cabins and an A/C salon. The McKinna 70 comes with a crew of five, including the captain, deckhands and a chef who cooks a multi-course menu on board, and complimentary drinks served by the crew. Both have a 3-hour minimum, enough time for the proposal and a dinner afterward; the luxury yachts page has both.

What our proposal setup includes, and what's extra
We don't sell a fixed proposal package. Included in the charter price:
- The private yacht with its captain (and crew on the larger yachts), for your group only.
- The route you choose, the CONANP fee for the protected area, and the option to stay anchored in the bay until 10 PM on yachts that leave from the marina.
Quoted separately: flowers (a bouquet or petals on deck), a celebration cake, drone photos and video, and hotel pickup. Decorations are cardstock and a sign only, because the Port Captain no longer allows balloons on board, and loose confetti or glitter is out. The yachts don't sell or serve alcohol, but guests 18 and older can bring their own, so champagne is up to you. On the Azimut 70 and the McKinna 70 the crew serves complimentary drinks.
If you want something to eat after the yes, order it in the planner: a small cheese board is MXN 780 and a medium board MXN 1,440 (cash prices; paying by card adds 16%).
The photographer on board
A professional photographer can join for USD 180, with all the photos from your charter, paid directly to the photographer; add it in the planner. Mention the proposal when you book and say which moment you want covered, so the photographer and the captain work from the same plan. Agree on a signal: you take off your sunglasses, for example, and the captain slows the boat while the photographer gets in position. Ask for shots before, during and after the ring comes out.
If you'd rather use your own photos, hand your phone to a crew member, unlocked and in burst mode. For a longer session with the two of you after the yes, our engagement photos on a yacht guide covers the light hour by hour.
Keeping the proposal a surprise
A private charter makes the secret easy to keep, since there are no other passengers and nobody announcing anything over a microphone. A few things help.
Book it as a sunset cruise. To your partner, that's all it is. Send us a WhatsApp message at +52 624 300 8029 to tell us it's a proposal, where on the route you'd like to ask, and anything you're bringing on board. We reply within 2 hours, between 8 AM and 8 PM Cabo time.
Keep the ring in a zipped pocket or a bag, not loose in your hand at the rail. A boat moves, and anything that goes over the side is gone.
Pick your moment before you board: at the Arch, when the boat slows near the sea lions, or at anchor off Lover's Beach. Tell us which one you want so the captain knows the plan before you leave the dock.
Booking a proposal cruise
Open the planner, choose the yacht, date and length, and add food if you want it. Once the date is confirmed in writing, you pay through a secure Stripe link by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The Bayliner 30 boards at Dock 1-A (Zaidas), by Captain Tony's, in Marina Cabo San Lucas, and your boarding pass repeats the dock with a map link.
For two people, start with the Bayliner 30. If you're planning the whole trip around the proposal, our Cabo honeymoon guide covers the days after, and if the answer was yes a while ago, the vow renewal guide is the same trip for a different anniversary.
