The water on most Cabo boat trips is calm, because the bay of Cabo San Lucas and Land's End usually are; the Pacific side and the open water have more swell. If you get seasick, book a morning departure, ask for a route that stays in the bay, pick a bigger boat such as the 55 ft Sea Ray 55, and take something before you board after checking with your doctor.

Below is how the two sides of Cabo differ, when the water is smoothest, and what helps once you're on board.

Is the water rough in Cabo?

Cabo sits where two seas meet, and they behave differently.

The bay faces the Sea of Cortez. That's where the marina is, along with Médano Beach, Pelican Rock and Lover's Beach, and the water there is usually calm. The coves up the corridor toward San José, like Santa María Bay, face the same sea, and Santa María is a sheltered horseshoe.

The Pacific side starts just past the Arch. Nothing breaks the swell between the open ocean and that coast. You can see it at Divorce Beach, where big surf and a strong undertow make the sand a photo stop from the boat, not a swim stop. On a boat, you feel that swell under the hull as soon as you round Land's End.

Which Cabo boat routes have the calmest water?

Our four typical routes, from gentlest to most motion:

Route Where it goes Water
2 h Arch & Land's End Pelican Rock, sea lions, the Arch, Lover's and Divorce Beach, Médano Beach Mostly the bay, a short look at the Pacific side
4 h Santa María snorkel The Arch, then up the corridor to Santa María Bay Open water on the ride, a sheltered cove at the stop
5 to 8 h Santa María & Chileno The Arch, Santa María and Chileno, lunch at anchor Longer stretches of open water
2 h Pacific sunset Around Land's End toward the Cabo Falso lighthouse Open Pacific, the most swell

The 2 hour Arch loop is the easiest on a sensitive stomach. Most of it happens inside the bay, and the Divorce Beach look is brief. If the swell is up that day, tell the captain and they can keep you on the bay side. Routes on the site are typical, and the captain adapts them to the sea that day.

The Pacific sunset is the one to skip if you're worried. A sunset inside the bay gets you the Arch in golden light without the open-ocean stretch. Our sunset cruise page and the trip guide have the timing.

What is the best time of day for a boat tour in Cabo?

Morning. The wind usually builds after midday, and with it the chop. A 7 or 8 AM start gives you the calmest water of the day, and in summer it also gets you off the water before the hottest hours. Departures run from 7 AM to 7 PM, Cabo time, which is Mountain Standard Time all year.

The month matters a little too. Our trip guide's climate data (10-year averages, 2015 to 2024) shows the typical daily top wind:

Months Typical daily top wind
October to December 11 to 12 mph (18 to 19 km/h)
January and February 12 mph (19 km/h)
March to June 13 to 15 mph (21 to 24 km/h), windiest in May
July to September 12 mph (19 km/h)

Spring is the breeziest stretch, and fall the calmest. Even in May the bay is usually fine in the morning. It's the afternoon on the Pacific side that you'd want to avoid.

From September to mid-October there's a separate issue: that's when most harbor closures by the Port Captain happen. Our article on weather and cancellations explains how that works and what you get back.

Do bigger boats help with seasickness?

Generally, yes. With the same waves, a heavier boat has lower accelerations than a lighter one, so it rolls and pitches less. In our fleet, these are the boats we'd look at first for a seasick-prone group:

Yacht Guests 2 hours 3 hours
Sea Ray 55 Up to 15 min 3 h USD 2,129 / MXN 40,399
Azimut 45 Flybridge Up to 12 USD 1,249 / MXN 23,799 USD 1,649 / MXN 31,399
Pontoon 38 Up to 18 USD 869 / MXN 16,599 USD 1,269 / MXN 23,999

Prices are per boat, tax included, tip not included.

The Sea Ray 55 is a 55 ft flybridge motor yacht with air conditioning, cabins and heads. The Azimut 45 Flybridge is a 45 ft flybridge yacht for up to 12, with towels, snorkel gear, and a cooler with ice, water and sodas.

The Pontoon 38 is a different case. It's the biggest group boat we have, a double-deck party pontoon for up to 18, with a water slide from the upper deck and an enclosed head. Pontoon boats in general do best in protected water such as bays and coves, so with the Pontoon 38 we'd keep a seasick-prone group in the bay.

One more point about flybridges: the upper deck has the best view, but the higher you sit, the more the boat's roll moves you. If you start to feel off, come down to the main deck.

What to do on board if you get seasick

Most of this is about keeping your eyes and your inner ear in agreement.

If you start to feel sick, tell the crew early. They can help you find a seat in the shade toward the back, with fresh air and a clear view of the horizon.

Seasickness and refunds

Plan for it up front. Under our terms, seasickness or asking to return early does not qualify for a refund, so there's no money back for the unused time. The way to protect your money is the same as the way to protect your stomach: a morning start, a bay route and a bigger boat.

If someone in your group gets seasick easily, a 2 or 3 hour trip is usually a better bet than a full day. You can still see the Arch, the sea lions and a snorkel stop, with a shorter time on the water.

Booking a calm-water trip

When you send your request through the planner, mention that someone gets seasick. We'll suggest the yacht and a route that stays in calm water, and the captain adjusts on the day based on the sea. We reply in writing within 2 hours, 8 AM to 8 PM Cabo time. For the months with the calmest and driest days, see the best time to visit Cabo.

Questions people ask

Is the water rough in Cabo San Lucas?

Usually not inside the bay. The bay and Land's End are usually calm, while the Pacific side and the open water up the corridor have more swell.

What is the best time of day for a boat tour in Cabo if you get seasick?

Morning. The wind usually builds after midday, so the water tends to be calmest early. Departures run from 7 AM to 7 PM, Cabo time.

Which boat is best for seasickness in Cabo?

A bigger, heavier boat moves less in the same swell. In our fleet that means yachts like the Sea Ray 55 or the Azimut 45 Flybridge, on a route that stays in the bay.

Can I get a refund if I get seasick on the boat?

No. Under our terms, seasickness or asking to return early does not qualify for a refund, so it pays to choose a calm route, a morning start and a bigger boat when you book.
